Sport personalities will be honoured for their outstanding achievements in November when the 20th Namibia Annual Sport Awards (Nasa) are held.

The landmark ceremony on 23 November will encompass the first entries of the Namibia Sport Wall of Fame, “a dedicated space that displays details of exceptional contributors” in the sport fraternity.

The location and criteria for the latter initiative will be revealed closer to the event.

“With the wall of fame, we want to honour and reward sporting excellence by our top athletes, officials, and contributors,” says Erwin Handura, the Namibia Sports Commission’s development officer.

The upcoming Nasa is celebration of a 20-year legacy of sport in the country, the organisers say.

In keeping with the theme, the awards reception will feature 20 categories recognising the efforts of athletes primarily, the contribution of national federations to their success, plus sport legends and media personalities in the industry.

“Your achievements and contributions, both on and off the field, embody the spirit of determination and perseverance we all aspire to,” says John-Grafft Ndungaua, the Namibia Sports Commission’s sport development and marketing committee chairman.

“As we look forward to the main awards event slated for 23 November, let us continue to champion the values of fair play, respect, and excellence.

“May we be inspired by the awarding of excellence, making it a culture to give credit where it is due, and let us strive to make the world of sport even more inclusive and dynamic.”

The period under review for the awards is 1 October 2023 to 30 September 2024, the adjudication panel says.

They are encouraging the federations to “enter as many deserving athletes” as possible, and say they will make use of a metric system to evaluate the entries.

These will be audited by Hamilton and Co.

The Nasa 2024 categories are:

Sport star of the year, sportsman of the year, sportswoman of the year, junior sportsman of the year, junior sportswoman of the year, sportsman of the year with a disability, sportswoman of the year with a disability, junior sportsman of the year with a disability, junior sportswoman of the year with a disability, sports team of the year, coach of the year, umpire/referee of the year, sport development programme of the year, national federation of the year, the NSC Chairperson’s Award, the people’s choice sport star of the year, the community inspiration award, professional athlete of the year in the diaspora, sport journalist of the year, and the lifetime achievement award.
