30 000 food packs distributed to the public for independence celebration

Thirty thousand food packs that were meant to be given to people who were expected at the 35th Independence Day celebrations were distributed to members of the public in Windhoek on Friday.

The Independence Day celebrations and presidential inauguration that were scheduled to take place at Independence Stadium in Windhoek were relocated to State House due to rainy weather. Only a limited number of people were invited to the event at State House.

The event also saw Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah being sworn in as Namibia’s first woman president.

Some members of the public expressed disappointment about the cancellation of the public celebrations, with some saying they had woken up early in the morning only to hear that there would be no public event.

Swapo secretary general Sophia Shaningwa on Friday said some buses had transported several members of the public from Katutura to the Khomas Regional Council offices, where the food was being distributed, with some being distributed at different areas around Windhoek via lorries.

“All this is justice for the people as far as today is concerned. Let the people enjoy their independence and enjoy that comrade Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has arrived indeed,” Shaningwa said during the food distribution.
