45 arrested for drugs in //Karas

//KARAS police have arrested 45 suspects across the region for drug offences since January this year.

The regional crime coordinator, Chrispin Mubebo, yesterday said the region has a drugs problem, but was quick to add that it was now under control.

Mubebo could, however, not say why the region has a drug problem apart from urging the public to provide the police with information regarding dealers and users.

Marijuana offences accounted for the highest percentage of the arrests followed by Mandrax and crack cocaine.

Mubebo said the arrests made during the period were at Karasburg, Warmbad, Bethanie, Keetmanshoop, Tses, Oranjemund, Aussenkehr, Ariamsvlei, and Koës. He said the seizure of 12 parcels of cannabis weighing 8,8kg with an estimated street value of N$26 700 during a search at Ariamsvlei was one of the biggest hauls so far.

Statistics also show that police had seized drugs with a combined estimated street value of N$46 562 during arrests in the past four months.

All suspects were Namibian females and males, statistics indicate.
