A total of 80 Namibians lost their lives between 15 November and 5 January.
National police spokesperson deputy commissioner Kauna Shikwambi says 472 crashes and 918 injuries have been recorded during this period.
Most of these were caused by driver fatigue, drunken driving, speeding, reckless and negligent driving, and disobeying traffic rules, Shikwambi says.
In the meantime, 1 867 warnings and 12 227 summonses have been issued, with a total of 657 vehicle licence suspensions.
“More people are expected to travel back to various destinations as the festive season concludes next week and schools reopen. Road safety remains a collective responsibility, therefore the Namibian Police are cautioning all road users to remain patient, be alert and obey traffic rules,” she says.
Drivers have also been urged to prepare for changing weather conditions such as flash floods.
