LOCAL artist and businessman Lazarus Shiimi, whose stage name is Gazza, recently paid a visit to the Dubai Expo 2020.
Gazza says he visited Namibians working as senior motor mechanics in Dubai.
The artisans are inspired by the state-of-the art technology used in that country, he says.
“Things on the ground are very busy. You have robots of dustbins walking around if you have something to throw away.
“You have multicultural people walking around, wearing different fashion brands, and robots distributing information pamphlets.
“It is just robots everywhere. You enter the pavilion and you feel you are entering the future,” he says.
Gazza unveiled his youth employment project, which aims to send 58 young Namibians to Dubai for artisan training at the Streit Group, an armoured vehicle manufacturer.
Gazza this week he said the exposure could put Namibia on the map and boost tourism to the country.
“It really can open up your mind to see how different countries do things, and that their focus is on different stuff.
“I wish we could have something like that in Namibia – even if it is at an expo that focused on a different sector.
“I hope this would really open up the tourism industry that was hard hit, apart from the music industry,” he told a radio station.
Gazza said Namibia’s stand was different in that it promoted Namibian culture.
“If you go to the Namibian stand after all the other stands, you would feel relieved after all this cutting-edge technology.
“When I went there, I felt at home. The pavilion that I enjoyed was Russia, where they focused on a human brain and how it functions.
“I wanted to see Japan, where you had to book in advance, but that one was always full as well as the pavilion of the United Arab Emirates.”
Streit Group is one of the world’s leading, privately owned armoured vehicle manufacturers, with 12 state-of-the-art production facilities and 25 offices worldwide.
