TWENTY-EIGHT members of the navy wing of the Namibian Defence Force (NDF) on Wednesday escaped injuries after being involved in a head-on collision.
According to the Erongo police report, one soldier sustained serious injuries, but is said to be in a stable condition.
Another sustained minor injuries.
The accident happened at about 07:00 on the B2 highway, 30km from Arandis towards Usakos.
Erongo community affairs unit commander inspector Ileni Shapumba confirmed the incident, saying the bus transporting the soldiers was avoiding a truck which allegedly came to a sudden halt.
“In the process, he allegedly lost control of the vehicle, it swerved into the line of oncoming traffic, and as a result collided head-on with a bakkie,” Shapumba said.
According to Shapumba, the 54-year-old male driver of the bakkie was travelling alone, and sustained serious injuries, but is in a stable condition.
He was referred to a Windhoek hospital for further treatment, while the soldiers were treated at Usakos State Hospital.
Ministry of Defence and Veterans Affairs spokesperson Petrus Shilumbu on Wednesday said the soldiers were travelling from Walvis Bay to Lüderitz where they are to assume new duties.
