Ovaherero Traditional Authority gets transitional leadership

THE Ovaherero Traditional Authority (OTA) has made a transitional arrangement for the office of the Ovaherero paramount chief.

This comes after paramount chief Vekuii Rukoro died at the age of 66 in a Windhoek hospital on Friday, days after the traditional authority announced he had tested positive for Covid-19.

The transitional arrangement has been put in place until a new paramount chief is elected or determined by the OTA’s senate.

The OTA said in a statement on Tuesday that a seven-member transitional committee has been formed, with the traditional authority’s current secretary general, Mutjinde Katjiua, as chairperson.

The other committee members are chief Vipuira Kapuuo, chief Boas Tjingaete, chief Tuendejekuje Rukambe-Uazukuanii, Mac Hengari, Lourensia Katjitae and Amon Ngavetene.

The Ovaherero Genocide Foundation’s chairperson, Nandiuasora Mazeingo, has been appointed as the traditional authority’s acting secretary general for the transitional period, it was also announced.

Mazeingo will also serve as ex-officio member and secretary to the transitional committee.

Katjiua said the transitional committee will draw expertise or advice from individuals or entities when appropriate for its tasks.

“All the other structures and offices of the OTA political and administrative architecture remain unchanged,” Katjiua added.
