Fisherman dies at sea

A FISHERMAN on board the Tunga fishing vessel, which belongs to Tunacor Fishing, died on Tuesday while the vessel was steaming to port seeking emergency medical attention.

Tunacor chief executive officer Peya Hitula confirmed that the 47-year-old crew member suffered a “health condition” on 8 February.

Hitula said the fisherman’s condition deteriorated fast despite on-board medical assistance.

“Unfortunately the vessel was at the time working around 42 hours away from the nearest port, and was still within 24 hours at the time of his passing,” he said.

He requested that the deceased’s family and fellow crew members are respected.

The deceased’s cause of death has not been confirmed.

His remains arrived on shore on Wednesday.

“The crew will be provided with professional counselling, and all established medical protocols are being followed in full cooperation with the Ministry of Health and Social Services,” he said.

Hitula said the company is in constant communication with the relevant authorities, and investigations on the cause of death are ongoing.
