Get cosy with Ethnix

AS performances and events slowly start making their way back onto our calendars, local duo Ethnix is leading the pack tomorrow with a live show and bonfire at The Garden Inn.

‘Bonfire Acoustic Night’ will be a weekly event featuring various guests, and serves as the second season of the popular online live performance show ‘Therapy Session’, which was held weekly on Instagram during the lockdown.

“We know people have been waiting to freely go out and enjoy themselves at restaurants or clubs. It’s been a long time without proper face-to-face entertainment, since it’s all been happening on social media platforms,” says Julius Hamwele, who sings alongside Etjo Kangumine – the other half of Ethnix.

The two have been working together for several years and dropped their debut project ‘Made in Namibia’ in 2019, featuring their signature sound of traditional music fused with rap in Oshiwambo and Otjiherero.

“I’m really excited, I can’t wait to be back on stage with an actual crowd,” says Hamwele.

He says ‘Bonfire Acoustic Night’ provides the ideal space for the audience to socialise around a cosy fire, with warm food, beverages and live music.

“We’re going to have a full-blown, live, band performance, and twist most of the songs to give them a new feel,” Hamwele says.

Fans can expect songs from the duo’s latest album in ways that have never been heard before, as they transition to live performances.

As an establishment hoping to keep their patrons safe, but still able to enjoy themselves and have a sense of normalcy in unpredictable times, Bomba Shiguedha, Garden Inn’s owner, says the venue will be pulling out all the stops in the fight to curb the spread of Covid-19.

“Everyone will receive hand sanitiser as they enter, and will only be allowed in with a mask. We will be carefully monitoring numbers and promoting a social-distancing culture,” he says.
