Hardap Dam level rising

THE Hardap Dam’s level has been on a slow and steady rise over the past four days following rainfall in its catchment area.

Hardap Farmers Association chairperson Dawie de Klerk says the dam’s level has increased to 14,2% this morning following significant water inflows due to rain in the catchment area.

The dam’s level stood at 6,5% on Monday this week.

The Hardap Dam is Namibia’s largest surface water reservoir, and is the main water source for Mariental residents and Hardap irrigation scheme farmers.

The dam has been enduring a torrid time lately, with the its contents falling to the lowest level since it was built in 1963. Because of this, the bulk water utility NamWater had to reduce its water supply to Hardap irrigation farmers.

The water restrictions still apply for the irrigation farmers.

The dam has been receiving an inflow of water since Wednesday this week. By Friday morning its level had risen to 11,3% of its storage capacity.

A year ago, the Hardap Dam’s level stood at 29,6%.
