No New Year crossover events during curfew

The Erongo police is urging residents to prepare their New Year celebrations within the confines of the Covid-19 regulations.

According to inspector Ileni Shapumba, specifically churches have been asking to hold crossover events between the curfew times of 21h00 and 04h00.

“All gatherings have to end at 21h00, including crossover events. It is not that we do not want you to have your celebrations, its just that we are in a critical time and everybody must adhere to the safety of all. The regulations apply to all social activities within the realm of the law,” he said.

The police are also aware of church services where leaders are prophesying and praying for people without wearing masks and where touching is taking place.”

Shapumba also warned residents not to use fireworks within municipal areas and not to leave their homes on New Year’s Eve after 21h00.

He extended his appreciation towards residents for adhering to the rules this past weekend.

The police had no major problems, except for five drunken driving incidents, 10 domestic violence reports and a few other alcohol-related cases.

He applauded shebeen and bar owners, particularly in Walvis Bay, for adhering to the rules and even making an effort to educate each other, and urged the rest of the Erongo community to emulate their examples.

During the past weekend, the police focused on civic education and sensitizing the public.
