HEAVY rains recorded in the Hardap Dam catchment area this week have caused damages to a canal feeding irrigation farmers with water from the dam.
Hardap Farmers Association chairperson Dawie de Klerk confirmed this on Friday. He said an overflowing Dabib River had caused the damages to the canal due to heavy rainfall.
The canal is the property of NamWater. De Klerk said repair work on the damage canal system is expected to commence within the next 48 hours. "Funds were availed (sic) for the repair works, and workers have already started cleaning flooded areas of the canal system," he said.
The farmer said the rains recorded in the area had pushed up the Hardap Dam level to 11,3%. According to NamWater’s dam bulletin, the Hardap Dam stood at a dangerous low level of about 6% on Monday.
De klerk said the dam was still receiving water inflows, and said rain prospects in the dam’s catchment area look good.
