Parents urged to play role in education

ERONGO education director Ernfriede Stephanus has called on parents to become stakeholders in their children’s education – especially those in Grade 1, as it is uncertain whether they will be promoted or not.

“I do not want to pre-empt and say pupils will be promoted automatically. It may happen, but with the Grade1 pupils, we must remember there is a need to be taught seriously, because it is a foundation,” she said.

The Erongo education directorate will have consultative meetings with stakeholders next week.

A report will then be submitted to the Ministry of Education, Arts and Culture’s head office.

Stephanus said rural schools are under-utilized because more children are enrolled at urban schools.

Planning to renovate some hostels in rural areas are underway, and parents are urged to also consider sending their children to rural schools, she said.

The region currently has more primary than secondary schools, and it has become difficult for secondary schools to absorb all pupils from primary schools.

Grade 10, 11 and 12 pupils in the region are back in school, while the younger ones are staying at home.

Stephanus was speaking at the Erongo regional governor’s state of the region adress at Swakopmund on Wednesday.
