DRIKUS Coetzee and Irene Steyn were the overall winners at the annual awards ceremony of the Gravel and Dirt MTB Marathon Series over the weekend.
They were the overall series winners, based on their total accumulated points across all races, with Coetzee also winning the Elite Male category and Steyn the Veteran Women’s category.
The awards ceremony concluded a very successful season with mountain bike riders from all over Namibia competing in seven events, which each had its own unique challenges.
They took on the coast, traversed the Ugab Terrace and persevered over the blistering Gobabis heat, competing not only against the elements but also against the best mountain bike riders that Namibia has to offer.
This year, the Gravel and Dirt MTB Marathon Series reached new heights and firmly established itself as one of the most popular events on the calendar, with thousands of cyclists lining up over the past few months to compete.
Most of the major teams were represented by their champion riders, taking on full and half marathons at each event, while the youth categories also saw an impressive turnout of riders.
Numerous sponsors contributed to the success of the series including Hollard Namibia, Namibia Breweries Limited, Kia Motors, Cymot, Mannie’s Bike Mecca, Food Lovers Market, Panamor Gel and E-Med Rescue 24.
Hollard Namibia, meanwhile, announced their continued support for the Gravel and Dirt MTB Marathon Series as the main sponsor, ensuring that the next three years will see the series becoming a household name, and synonymous with the successes that Namibia’s mountain bike riders have achieved locally and internationally.
“Hollard will continue to grow and support the sport, providing the perfect platform for our current champions to showcase their skills, inspiring the next generation of Namibian MTB riders to go even further, push even harder, and stamp down their dominance at events all over the world,” Hollard said in a press release.
