A night of classical music at Cota

A night of classical music and vocal brilliance is set to warm Windhoek this Friday, 28 June.

The College of the Arts (Cota) will host its first ever classical music concert featuring Angolan singers as the main acts. The event will also see the Cota choir performing, as conducted by Fanie Dorfling. The main acts, Glaucio Ngaca and Beloastro Pena, are bass and baritone singers. A composition piece by Ngaca will also be featured on the night, highlighting how he has grown as a classical artist.

The singers are both enrolled at Cota, training as opera singers. Pena said his love for music started at home as a child. When he moved to Namibia, he bought his first guitar in 2009. “While in Windhoek, I happened upon the College of the Arts, and enrolled with them,” he said. His instrumental interests include the jazz piano and classical piano. Ngaca is currently studying classical music and music theory at Cota, and said he has always beenaround music since childhood. “Music is something that has always been part of me,” he said. “I’m just someone who is reallyappreciative of music, but I never thought that I would become a singer.” The singers said they have noticed that classical music is not appreciated by all Namibians, and wantto bring this experience to a larger audience. “We’ve noticed that not all Namibians are part of theaudience,” Pena said, “and we want to promote this experience a little bit more.” The concert takes place at the Cota hall, and starts at 19h00.
