PETER MURONGA RUNDU – THE Maria Mwengere Secondary School, located just outside Rundu in the Kavango East region, will this year host the winter deaf schools sports tournament.
The tournament is held annually, and invites schools with hearing-impaired learners from all over the country to compete for top honours in three sports categories.
The schools will be competing in football, volleyball and netball from today until Saturday.
A member of the organising committee and teacher at Maria Mwengere Secondary School, Erna Muronga, told Nampa on Tuesday that the tournament encourages learners with hearing difficulties to take part in sports.
“Some of them will be selected to be part of the regional and national sports teams of people with disabilities,” she noted.
Muronga said there will be a lot of activities during the tournament, including a beauty pageant to crown Mr and Miss Winter Deaf Schools Sports Tournament, which will take place at the school itself.
“We call on members of the public to come in their numbers to support these special learners, the tournament as well as the beauty pageant,” she urged.
People should come to support the learners, and witness for themselves how learners with hearing difficulties can play sports, Muronga added.
Maria Mwengere Secondary School won the tournament last year, which was held at Eluwa Special School in the Ohangwena region.
