YOKANY OLIVEIRA THE Namibia University of Science and Technology has appointed Morné du Toit as acting vice chancellor from 1 April 2019 while the institution searches for a substantive vice chancellor.
Du Toit previously held the position of deputy vice chancellor of administration and finance at the university.
The chairperson of the Nust Council, Esi Schimming-Chase, said in a press statement yesterday that Du Toit will be acting after Tjama Tjivikua has left. Tjama Tjivikua, will be leaving the institution on 31 March 2019 after 23 years. Schimming-Chase said Tjivikua’s commitment to steer the institution during his 23 years at the university was unwavering.
“I believe that we would all agree that the progress made at [the] polytechnic and later at Nust was thanks to Dr Tjivikua’s consistent and determined pursuit of excellence,” she stated. Schimming-Chase added: “We at Nust, along with stakeholders from the education, research and industry sectors, express our enduring gratitude to Dr Tjivikua for his role in the advancement of this institution.”
reported on 7 February 2019 that 39 people had applied for the position of Nust vice chancellor, and that five candidates had been shortlisted.
However, the university’s registrar, Maurice Garde, yesterday said the council has reopened the search for a new vice chancellor.
“We are expanding the search for a new vice chancellor because we want the best possible candidate for the university,” Garde added. Tjivikua could not be reached for comment yesterday.
