Mutorwa reinstates airport company director

WORKS minister John Mutorwa has reinstated Beverley Gawanas-Vugs as Namibia Airports Company director.

“Gawanas-Vugs is hereby reinstated as an ordinary board member of the Namibia Airports Company, with immediate effect,” he said in a letter dated 16 October 2018 and directed to attorney general Albert Kawana.

Mutorwa said new board director businessman Leake Hangala will still remain on the board as chairperson, even though Gawanas-Vugs is reinstated.

Mutorwa told The Namibian today that the dispute with Gawanas-Vugs is being handled by government lawyers.

Her lawyer, Sisa Namandje, filed urgent court papers this week to challenge Mutorwa’;s decision to remove Gawanas-Vugs from the NAC board last week. She only learnt about the sacking through a media statement.

The outspoken Gawanas-Vugs is known to have rejected pressure from politicians and a clique of technocrats in the works ministry who pushed for tenders.

Namandje poked holes in Mutorwa’;s sacking decision saying the law did to give the minister powers to remove a NAC director.

“We have properly considered the matter, including the provisions of the Namibia Airports Company Act, which does not give the minister the right to remove directors,” said Namandje.
