State funeral for Nghidinwa

PRESIDENT Hage Geingob has accorded late former minister Rosalia Nghidinwa a state funeral.

Acting information permanent secretary Roselia Penda made the announcement today.

Penda said further funeral arrangements will still be communicated.

Also today, the National Assembly expressed its deep felt sympathy and condolences over the untimely death of former cabinet minister, Rosalia Nghidinwa.

Nghidinwa passed away in the Roman Catholic Hospital on Sunday night.

Speaker of the National Assembly Peter Katjavivi in a media statement said Parliament and the nation at large would miss the seasoned leader and mother who had a passion to care for the needy.

He described the late Nghidinwa as a parliamentarian who had a “strong commitment towards community development programmes in rural areas and improving the welfare of vulnerable groups including citizens, women and children”.

The late Nghidinwa was a long serving member of the Swapo Party since 1974.

She was a nurse by profession and an active member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Namibia (ELCIN) and served on the church’s governing council from 1991 to 1996.

She served as minister of labour and social welfare from 2000 to 2005 and as minister of home affairs and immigration from 2005 to 2012.

Nghidinwa was appointed minister of gender equality and child welfare in December 2012, a position she held until her retirement in 2015.
