NBC workers back on the streets

NAMIBIA Broadcasting Corporation workers were back on the streets last week Thursday, demanding that the company pays an overdue 6% salary increase and the back pay which they demonstrated for in June this year.

The workers gathered in front of their offices in Windhoek, hoping to hand over a petition with their demands. However, the petition handover did not take place as hoped when the NBC’s board members and executive failed to show up. Speaking to The Namibian on the sidelines, shop-steward Chris Appolus promised that the workers would be holding a demonstration on a daily basis between 13h00 and 14h00.

He said they had been waiting for a long time for their back pay, but that management has been silent on their request, which he said shows how inconsiderate they are of the workers’ plight.

“We have reached a point, where if possible, we will shut down NBC because they do not value us,” stressed Appolus, adding that workers were also holding demonstrations in the Otjozondjupa, Zambezi and Oshana regions.

He said this is the fourth time this year that they had demonstrated over the 6% salary increase, which they should have received this year.

NBC board chairperson Sven Thieme did not answer phone calls or respond to messages, and the communications department’s Beaulah Boois was waiting on management for answers to questions by .
