THE suspected poacher who was severely injured by a rhino last week in the Etosha National Park succumbed to his injuries on Saturday.
The alleged poacher, whose name cannot be mentioned because his next of kin have not been informed, was injured when a rhino charged him and his companion.
Two men were found injured but alive in Etosha National Park over the weekend. However, the severely injured man died of his injuries on Saturday.
Kunene police spokesperson, warrant officer Simson Shilongo, told The Namibian that the other man, Luteni Muharukua (age unknown), was receiving medical treatment at the Opuwo State Hospital under police guard.
“His friends took him to, and hid him on a nearby mountain, and he was arrested there the next day by the police,” Shilongo said. The two suspected poachers had entered the national park illegally to poach rhinos.
However, while they were tracking a rhino, it appeared from nowhere, and charged at them. It appears that Muharukua fell, and the animal severely injured his leg.
A post mortem will be conducted to establish the cause of death of the one man. The police investigation continues.
