THE old adage goes that there is no place like home. But visit Mr Price Home, @Home Living and promptly go to one of your friends’ homes and you’ll quickly realise that your décor taste isn’t as unique as you would think.
Kamnap Design Studio on the other hand is working on changing that by creating bespoke and hand-crafted furniture and décor for Namibian households.
A home-brewed design studio, Kamnap is currently hosting a furniture exhibition at the Project Room at 32 Jenner Street in Windhoek West. From using materials like cement, wood, seatbelts, cork and 3D printed material, the designers have managed to bring a unique, and practical furniture to the Namibian design world.
Kamnap only officially launched early this year, and the new company is a collaboration between Adriaan van Wyk, Renate Wehl and Stefan Oosthuizen who respectively produce hand-crafted furniture, 3D printed product design as well as graphic and interior design.
Stepping into the Project Room, I am instantaneously drawn to their red 3D printed lamp.
Upon further inspection of the price tag, I am happy to find the products are quite affordable and up my alley, unlike the likes of other design and furniture shops.
Adriaan enthusiastically greets me as I enter the exhibit and promptly begins to explain to me how the furniture is made and the material used, while Renate introduces herself then continues to walk around the space photographing the pieces and greeting people.
From welding the metals, 3D printing and drawing and painting some of the artworks – the pieces on exhibit would be a welcome addition to any Namibian home, and on top of the pieces for sale, they are able to create bespoke products for clients, as well as provide interior design services to those looking to revamp their space.
Although Kamnap is currently using Adriaan’s garage as a workshop space, I have no doubt in my mind that this studio will continue to expand and create interesting pieces.
‘Kamnap – A Collection of Handcrafted Furniture’ will be at the Project Room, situated at 32 Jenner Street, Windhoek West, from 2 September to 17 September.
Opening times are as follows: Tuesdays to Fridays between 09h00 and 13h00 and Saturday between 10h00 and 13h00.
