‘Die Laaste Karretjie Graf’ to show this month

DESPITE a few initial minor creative and casting problems, the first play in this year’s theatre festival of Committed Artists of Namibia (CAN), the Afrikaans play, ‘Die Laaste Karretjie Graf’, is now ready and poised to be staged on 27 and 28 May at the Ultimate Theatre at Eldorado School Hall in Khomasdal.

A selected play excerpt preview of the Afrikaans drama by South African world renowned playwright Athol Fugard will be exclusively staged for the benefit of the local invited print and electronic media on Saturday, 14 May at 18h00 also at the Ultimate Theatre at Eldorado School Hall in Khomasdal.

The full cast of the play are: David Campbell as Pienkies, the eldest son of the Geduld family, Shirley Swartz as the granny and matriarch of the family trapped in abject poverty, John Isaacs as Toek Toek, the second eldest son in the family and daughter, Rokkies, portrayed by Astrid Dirks, a Grade 9 pupil at Khomas Tura Secondary School in Khomasdal.

Veteran actor Felicity Celento portrays the part of Sarah, a university social researcher on the socio economic situation of the nomadic Khoi San people in South Africa, and play director Frederick Philander stars in the role of double murderer Koot Geduld in this captivating stage work that reflects strongly on passion killings.

Tickets to see the show will cost N$150 at the door, while season tickets to see all other plays showing during the festival, running from May to August, will cost N$200.

Further enquiries related to the plays and the festival can be directed to Philander at 0817172406.
