THE Namibian newspaper, together with the Hanns Seidel Foundation (HSF) and the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR), will host ‘Youth Perspectives on Harambee’, an interactive panel discussion featuring expert input, youth opinions and entertainment on 14 June.
A panel of experts will give an overview of some concerns relating to the youth and the Harambee Prosperity Plan, before moving to a discussion with the youth in attendance about their concerns with the plan.
The panel will consist of Max Weylandt (researcher, IPPR), Emma Theofelus (deputy speaker of the Children’s Parliament) and Vincent Shimutwikeni (Nanso spokesperson).
The event will take place from 12h00 to 14h00 at the Warehouse Theatre in Windhoek.
Entertainment at the event will be provided by local artist Meta and spoken word poet Ashwyn. Youth in attendance will have access to free Wifi provided by Paratus Telecom to enable them to ask questions and make other contributions via the hashtag of the event.
The youth is considered a critical demographic for Namibia’s future development. People aged 15 to 34 represent close to half of the population, and the question is whether Namibia can reap the ‘demographic dividend’ as this large share of young people enters the workforce.
Currently, the youth experience is characterized by struggle, with up to 40 percent of the youth being unemployed. Harambee includes several measures targeted at improving the position of the youth. These measures include the establishment of a Youth Enterprise Development Fund, and the employment of youth in a variety of schemes around the country.
