Auas Motors have joined the list of sponsors for The Namibian Pick ‘n Pay Cycle Classic, the organisers announced on Tuesday.
“The Namibian Pick ‘n Pay Cycle Classic has since its launch 15 years ago become the country’s premier cycling event and this attracted us to partner with the other sponsors to host the 2015 edition,” said Auas Motors boss Frans van Staden.
Another drawcard was that funds generated from sponsorship and entry fees are ploughed back into community service projects and used to finance the development of cycling for all, Van Staden added.
“As Namibia’s preferred GM (General Motors) dealer it also made sense for us to partner with the two prestigious name sponsors of Cycle Classic, being the country’s leading daily newspaper The Namibian, and its fastest growing retail supermarket chain Pick ‘n Pay,” said Van Staden.
Supporting sporting programmes is nothing new for the motor vehicle dealership and dates back to 1953 when the firm opened for business, according to Van Staden.
Part of the Namibian Stock Exchange (NSX) listed Nictus Group, Auas Motors operates a network of branches around Namibia, with one recently opened in Tsumeb.
In accepting the sponsorship, Rotary Club Windhoek president Frank Schwardmann pointed out that in addition to its cash sponsorship, Auas Motors will also provide a support vehicle for use during the mountain bike and road bike races.
Schwardmann added that before and after the Kiddies Classic race, the youngsters and their guardians will be treated to a viewing of the firm’s range of vintage Chevrolet vehicles.
“Those in the market for a new car will also have a chance to see the latest range of vehicles on offer from Auas Motors at the Cycle Classic Expo,” says Schwardmann.
Staged for the 16th consecutive year, The Namibian Pick ‘n Pay Cycle Classic takes place on Saturday and Sunday.
The popular event attracts thousands of entries from all over the country annually. It is a combination of family fun, competition and fundraising.
For those who have not yet entered, late entries will be accepted at the event venue – the Doc Jubber Hockey Field in Windhoek’s Olympia suburb – on Friday evening and on Saturday morning.
