THE 34-year-old City Police officer killed by a driver who was allegedly drunk in Hochland Park more than two weeks ago was laid to rest at the Gammams cemetery in Windhoek on Saturday.
Manfred Gaoseb is the first City Police officer to die in the line of duty. He joined the City Police in March 2009.
Gaoseb died when a suspected drunk driver hit him and two other men along Sam Nujoma Drive in the Hochland Park area on 3 July 2015.
He was accorded a burial with full honours as a member of the City Police who died in the line of duty.
Uniformed officers performed a full-honorary salute, and a brass band and choir formed part of the funeral procession.
City Police chief Abraham Kanime said during the service it is important to remember that law enforcement officers go to work every day prepared to give their lives to protect the lives of others.
He said the late Gaoseb’s name will be inscribed on a Windhoek Municipal Police service memorial as a hero who sacrificed his life making Windhoek the safest city in Africa.
The memorial site will be created in his honour, as well as that of other members of the police force who die in the line of duty.
Kanime also handed over the late Gaoseb’s official headdress, belt and a national flag to his widow. The burial was attended by Windhoek mayor Muesee Kazapua and the Khomas regional police commander, Heinrich Tjiveze among others.
