Grootfontein Secondary School Hosts Inter-House Athletics 2015

With the help of Grootfontein Municipality, the Grootfontein Secondary School successfully hosted their inter-house athletics competition on 30 January.

With a crowd of approximately 500 spectators, the sports day was one to for the record books, with 285 participants breaking records. For new records, a number of 18 gold medals, 63 silver, 63 bronze and 63 silver certificates were awarded courtesy of Namibia Bottling Company.

As it is a tradition for many schools to host such events and a policy from the education ministry, the Head of Department for Sports, Frans Eigowab, states that they host the annual event to benefit the pupils. “We host the competitions to keep the pupils fit and help them have a healthy mind,” he said.

Chantell Du Plessis and Shigwedha Fales were named as best boy and girl in sprinting, Kaluwapa Rebekka and Jacob Trevor were named the best boy and girl long distance runners. Tobias Jacobina and Shidute Joseph were recognised as the best in hurdles.

Outstanding performers were Neliwa Kaunapewa and Ngandula Willbard as Junior Victor and Victrix Ludorum. Virginia Manfred and Martin Botma were Senior Victrix and Victor Ludorum.

“The elite performers are the cream of the crop. We are expecting some new records and best times to be set by them for the next championship which is the Zonals slated for 21 February in Grootfontein,” said Frans

Frans compliments the competition for allowing all pupils to participate even in categories such as under 13.
