Last weekend saw the final match of the first part of the 2014 FNB Classic Clashes being held in Walvis Bay.
Walvis Bay Private School and HTS met on the rugby field in Walvis Bay and the hosts celebrated a 19-12 victory during their coastal FNB Classic Clashes match.
HTS started on a high note and took a 12-0 lead at the break. l
The second half however belonged to the home team who also had a huge crowd cheering for them. They dominated the entire second half and managed to overturn the score to their advantage.
Says an onlooker: “We almost witnessed a draw but during the final minutes Walvis Bay showed a moment of brilliance to score the winning try.”
Johan Bothma, sport organizer at Walvis Bay Private High School said that the highlight of the game was the winning try scored by Cameron Langenhoven three minutes from the end.
He added: “The game was played fairly and it was very hard. Players of both sides competed very hard and gave it their all. The wind could have been a deciding factor.”
Mariette Janse van Rensburg from Walvis Bay Private School won the Namib Mills Hero award. She is also the Junior Mayor and involved with charity.
The FNB Man of the match award went to Paolo Andrews of Walvis Bay Private School.
The FNB Classic Clashes will continue with three more soccer matches on 12, 19 and 20 September 2014.
On 12 September, Concordia and Rocky Crest will meet in Windhoek while on 19 and 20 September the matches will be in Ongwediva between Ongha Senior Secondary School and Nehale Senior Secondary School ;and Okatana Combined School and Haudano Secondary School.
