The DTS Volleyball for All tournament, which will take place for the 31st consecutive year on 1 February, was launched in Windhoek on Wednesday.
Windhoek Draught will once again be the main sponsor of the event which will be hosted on the DTS club premises in Olympia.
At Wednesday’s launch, the brand manager of Windhoek Draught, Carmen-Rae Bridgens, said they were proud to be associated with the event.
“We have been involved with this tournament for 30 years and have been amazed by the event’s growth from a small tournament into one of the top events on Namibia’s social calendar,” she said.
The tournament has grown over the years from a mere 50 teams to a new record of 140 teams competing on 20 courts last year.
The chairperson of DTS club, Gerhardt Jessen thanked Windhoek Draught for their sponsorship, saying the tournament would not be possible without it.
“Most people don’t realise the costs involved in both hosting and organising an event of this size. If it wasn’t for the ongoing generous support from Namibia Breweries, the entry fee would have been beyond the means of everybody,” he said.
“We would like to emphasise that Volleyball for All is exactly what the name says – it is aimed at the community where everybody can have fun without the emphasis on competition and winning. In these tough economic times we need to have some fun and what a way to start the year,” he added.
Entries for the tournament close today and according to one of the organisers, the entries were streaming in.
“The entries close on Friday, but if we reach the maximum of 24 men and 216 mixed teams, we will not be able to accommodate more teams,” she said.
Apart from medals, additional prizes can be won, such as the best dressed team, the sportiest team and the best organised team.
The tournament also offers companies a great opportunity for team building, while food, provided by Hartlief will be provided throughout the day.
After the finals and prize giving, DJ Coco will entertain the crowd in the beer tent till late at night.
