A TOTAL of 975 cadets graduated at the Osona military base near Okahandja on Monday.
They were officially welcomed into the Namibian Defence Force (NDF) by Minister of Defence, Nahas Angula during the passing out parade of the 12th Recruit Training Intake.
“I made it clear when I opened the training in July this year that only those who are disciplined and dedicated will make it, and that is exactly what transpired during this training,” he said.
Angula noted that 24 recruits were not able to complete the training due to illness, resignation, and criminal activities such as forgery. He said it is sad to see young Namibians missing out on job opportunities due to criminal behaviour.
“It is one thing to be withdrawn from training because of health conditions, but it is totally another thing to be withdrawn because of desertion, criminal records and forgery,” said the minister.
He further reminded graduands that to achieve the NDF’s vision and mission requires quality soldiers, who will be guided by the principles of patriotism and professionalism.
Michael Valungameka, on behalf of his fellow graduands, assured the nation that the soldiers are ready to defend the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Namibia at all costs through the knowledge acquired during the training.
“Life is hard; life is cruel, but ‘The Centre of Excellence’ proved and taught us that hard times never kill as long as the heart and mind are dedicated to achieve a certain goal,” he said.
Valungameka noted that the 30 and 100 kilometre routes the recruits marched, caused exhaustion, and sleepless days and nights, but it was worth it because now they can call themselves soldiers.
“When we entered this base, we were like lion cubs – young and innocent, always waiting to be fed – but now we are transformed to become adult lions to defend our motherland and beyond,” he said proudly.
Meanwhile, a total of 1001 recruits are expected to graduate on Friday at the Oluno Military Base at Ondangwa in the Oshana region.
