Launched in July 2013, the Top Score Game Breakers League has now completed 20 rounds, and has exceeded everyone’s expectations. Organisers, players and coaches have described the inaugural league as life changing with indications that the league is exactly what the doctor ordered to inject excitement into primary school’s football.
Theo Katjimunje won the league. The final that was held at John Ya Otto Sports Field on 9 October was a great spectacle. Having put up a great fight Tobias Hainyeko deservedly obtained the second place.
MH Greef Primary School maintained their position as log leaders throughout the season but where unexpectedly defeated by Theo Katjimune in the semi-finals. They played Moses van der Byl in the playoffs for 3rd and 4th place with MH Greef ending in 3rd and Moses van der Byl 4th place. All four teams continued to deliver consistent solid performances to the end.
The scene was of great jubilation throughout the finals. Players and spectators alike enjoyed the games, entertainment and refreshments.
The special appearance by the Namibian Brave Warriors Head Coach, Ricardo Mannetti was a great highlight for the children. Ricardo did the honour of handing over all the prizes and encouraged the children to be part of the photo sessions, which are sure to stay in their memories for a long time to come.
Namib Mills Marketing Manager, Megan Zondagh said they were thrilled with the success of the inaugural Top Score Gamebreakers League.
“We could not have predicted the massive impact this league has had, not only on the children and the teachers, but also on our team. Namib Mills wanted to ensure a sustainable investment in the community and implementing this project has proven to be the correct decision. We are extremely proud of the players for the dedication and sportsmanship they have shown,” she said.
The Game Breakers programme was conceived in 2009 when Namib Mills seized the opportunity to get involved in this ground breaking youth football development programme.
For the last three years the project consisted of a one-day event involving ten local schools, each sending 20 boys and 20 girls.
This year, it was decided that the project needed to be transformed into a league between the 10 schools, which should make it more sustainable and in terms of the legacy it leaves with the coaches and the players.
