On Thursday pupils from Jan Mohr Secondary schools Scripture Union visited the Oude Rust Oord Old Age Home in Windhoek West to bring a smile to the neglected old people.
The pupils collected money amongst themselves and bought fruit for the elderly people. They also shared words from the Bible to encourage fellow pupils to care for their grandparents and added a drama to ensure that they left them with a few giggles.
Henog Tjikune a member from the Scripture Union shared the reasons why they decided to visit the old age home.
“We came together as a group and decided that we should give back to our elders in a small way because as youth we simply forget our grandparents who brought us up and sacrificed their youth for our good. They made all sorts of sacrifices to better our future. They faced untold troubles and brought us up with the hope that we will look after them in their old age,” he said.
He also said that some young people make the old feel unwanted and as a source of hindrance in their progress.
“It is the duty of the young to look after the old people in their community. They must be kind, considerate and compassionate toward elderly people. Everyone should make an effort to ensure that this happens,” said Maxandre Hendrickse, another member from the student group.
