Swakop unites in music again

Once a year, musical talents at the coast present themselves to the critical eye of the audience. Up and coming groups have the chance to demonstrate their abilities to the wider public. These appearances are sometimes stepping stones for unknown groups.

“There is a reason why Swakopmund is considered the stronghold of music in Namibia which is annually underlined by the Swakopmunder Musikwoche in December” says Board member of the Swakompund Arts Association, Christiane Berker.

The youngest of the music groups, MYO and the little drummers of the Namibian Rhythm Connection Academy will start off this much anticipated event. The Swakop Strings, the Meerdorfer Musik Schule and the Swakopmunder Männerchor will follow. Vocal Galore, Marinique Laubscher and the Swakopmund Youth Choir are also on the list of performers.

“Nine groups will present themselves this coming Friday, the 20th of September in the Bank Windhoek Kulturaula of the NPS (Namib Primary School) and for the 8th time the community at the coast can enjoy a variety of music.”

The special highlight of the evening will be the appearance of Cgals who have made it into the final round of the ATKV Animato Choir Competition this year. They’ll hopefully be leaving right after the concert for Johannesburg, South Africa to represent Namibia.

“Unfortunately we do not have sufficient funds as yet to send all singers to Johannesburg, hence we ask for the public’s support towards the Cgals. They will also represent Namibia at the Choir Olympiad in Latvia next year and are indeed real ambassadors of our nation,” Berker says. Tickets are available at Die Muschel in Swakopmund and are selling for N$60.
