WITH a single dance video, a 16-year-old Namibian boy from Arandis has become an overnight sensation, causing the word ‘tambula’ to go viral on social media.
Junias Fernando, a Grade 11 pupil at Kolin Foundation Secondary School, has captured the hearts of many with his dance moves to the amapiano track ‘Kusazo Shuba’ by Uncle Waffles, featuring Justin99, Pcee, and Eeque.
This has caught the attention of TikTok users and sparked a dance craze.
In the video, Fernando effortlessly moves to the rhythm of the song, repeatedly saying “tambula” as he shows off his smooth moves.
The word, which means “take” in Oshiwambo, has since become a popular catchphrase on social media.
Fernando, who is now known as ‘Tambula Boy’, says the video captured a spontaneous moment with his friends.
“I was just chilling with my bros in the street playing soccer. We then decided we should dance to see who can dance better. One of my friends put on the song, and I just went with the flow,” he says.
When asked why he included the word ‘tambula’ in his dance, he says: “I was telling my friends to tambula, to dance like I danced.”
Since the video went viral, Fernando has received attention from big names in the South African music industry, such as from Justin99 and Uncle Waffles, who have reposted his video on their social media pages.
“I am speechless right now. I can’t even explain my feelings. I can’t believe people from South Africa started liking and recreating my dance moves,” he says.
The video has not only gone viral on TikTok, but has also been shared on other social media platforms, such as Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp.
“If you want to try out something, don’t be afraid. Just do it! You never know who is watching and what opportunities may come your way,” he said.
