Man charged with murder, burning colleague’s body

A Windhoek resident appeared in court yesterday on charges in connection with the killing of a man whose burnt body was found in the city’s Southern Industrial area nearly two weeks ago.

Sydney Skrywer (40) appeared before magistrate Dawid Mukuyu in the Windhoek Magistrate’s Court on counts of murder, robbery and violating a dead body.
Skrywer was arrested on Friday last week.

The state is alleging that he killed a colleague, Julio Albertos (46), who worked with him at a business in Windhoek’s Southern Industrial Area, robbed him by stealing his cellphone, and afterwards set Albertos’ body on fire.

Albertos disappeared on 31 March.

His burnt body was found in a riverbed in the Southern Industrial Area on 6 April.

It is suspected that Albertos died after he was stabbed in the chest and sustained a skull fracture.

During his court appearance, the magistrate informed Skrywer of his right to legal representation and to apply to be released on bail.

Skrywer is being held in custody, after public prosecutor Rowan van Wyk said the state is opposed to him being granted bail, due to fears that he would flee or interfere with the investigation of his case, and that it would not be in the public interest or the interest of the administration of justice for him to be released on bail.

Van Wyk added that the state has a strong case against Skrywer, although investigations in the matter are still in an early stage.

Mukuyu postponed the case to 7 June for further investigations to be carried out.
