The Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECM) has registered 6 675 eligible voters for the Keetmanshoop Rural constituency by-election in the //Kharas region, to be held on 15 May.
The final register will be made available next Friday.
In a press release issued yesterday, ECN chief electoral and referanda officer Theo Mujoro said the vacancy occurred in the Keetmanshoop Rural constituency following the expulsion of former Landless People’s Movement (LPM) councillor Gerrit Witbooi.
The Regional Councils Act stipulates that a vacancy must be filled within 90 days.
“The ECN conducted from supplementary voter registration form 7 to 10 March, in terms of section 38(1) of the Electoral Act, Act 15 of 2014. The final voters register will be made available on 26 April, with 6 675 total registered voters for the Keetmanshoop Rural constituency,” said Mujoro.
Political parties contesting for the constituency also completed the candidate nomination process, said Mujoro.
Witbooi will run as an independent candidate, while the Independent Patriots for Change nominated Magdalena van Staden.
The LPM nominated Willem Labuschagne, the current Koës Village Council management committee chairperson and land management, agriculture, food security and solar energy expert.
Swapo nominated former regional councillor for Keetmanshoop Elias !Kharuxab, while the Popular Democratic Movement nominated Johannes Eiman.
Voter education is expected to start on 1 May, to be followed by the dispatching of sensitive materials to the regions, and the training of poling officers and polling agents.
“The bid for the printing of the ballot papers was awarded to Solitaire Press, while the verification of the sample ballot papers by authorised representatives of the political parties will be conducted on 25 April,” said Mujoro.
