Two TransNamib employees died after a train derailed on Thursday.
TransNamib spokesperson Abigail Raubenheimer says the train derailment occurred between Aus and Lüderitz.
Police spokesperson deputy commissioner Kauna Shikwambi also confirmed the accident.
According to a statement released by TransNamib on Friday, there were four staff members on the train carrying 20 wagons.
“The surviving staff members are receiving medical treatment. The family of the deceased have been notified, and representatives from TransNamib are providing support,” she said.
Raubenheimer said the company will share further information later in compliance with its protocols, and an investigation will be initiated to determine the cause of the incident.
“TransNamib deeply regrets this accident and expresses its sincerest condolences to the affected families,” she added.
Meanwhile, Shikwambi said the survivors managed to escape but experienced serious injuries.
“They were transferred from Aus Clinic to Lüderitz State Hospital for intensive care.
The deceased are the driver and assistant driver,” she said.
Investigations continue, Shikwambi said.
