Drivers involved in the accident where two Batswana men died were remanded in custody on culpable homicide charges during their first appearance in the Katima Mulilo Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.

On Saturday, around 03h00, Mathias Milupi (28), who was driving a blue Toyota Corolla with three passengers, hit a green Toyota Corolla driven by Dickson Sapala (28), also carrying three Batswana passengers, from behind along the Trans-Caprivi highway.

This resulted in both cars rolling off the road, causing multiple injuries to the passengers as well as the deaths of Semele Mamile (40) and Zimba Pogiso (55).

The other passengers were taken to the Katima Mulilo State Hospital, while the third Motswana man, Mpatane Opelo (40), was transferred to Windhoek Central Hospital for further medical attention.

Both drivers were arrested and are facing two counts of culpable homicide each.

Separately, Sapala is facing an additional charge of failing to ascertain injuries sustained by occupants as he initially fled the scene, while Milupi is facing an additional charge of driving under the influence of intoxicating liquor.

Their case has been postponed to 24 August for further investigations.

The two appeared before magistrate Davy Kambinda, while the state was represented by Cynthia Matiti.
