The Green Climate Fund (GCF) secretariat is currently conducting quality assessments of the Environmental Investment Fund (EIF) of Namibia’s climate resilience projects in the country until 6 July.

According to a statement issued by the EIF, the ad hoc mission will be drawing lessons to govern future project implementation and provide recommendations to ensure project results and impacts are achieved.

The secretariat will engage the government, civil society organisations, EIF project staff and management, community-based organisations and other stakeholders on the implementation of EIF projects.

“The GCF mission will visit project sites and meet project teams, project beneficiaries and affected people to gain first-hand insights into the community-level benefits of the approved climate change resilience projects,” the statement reads.

The EIF of Namibia is a direct access entity to the GCF and is accredited under micro-sized project and programme activities of up to US$10 million.

The GCF headquarters are in South Korea.

The delegation will also pay a courtesy visit to the Ministry of Finance and Public Enterprises, as well as the Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism.

The EIF has four GCF-approved funded projects, which are all adaptation ventures in the drought-stricken rural communities of Namibia.

According to the EIF, the total funding of the projects is US$39,1 million, comprising US$37,7 million in GCF financing and US$1,4 million in co-financing.

“To date, US$30,9 million of the GCF-approved funds has been disbursed for all EIF projects under implementation,” the statement says, adding that the projects are at different stages of implementation.

The GCF secretariat will visit the Ovitoto communal conservancy project, the Ozonahi bush-based animal feed production project, Haub Conservancy hydroponics, the Sorris Sorris conservancy, the Otjimboyo Resilience Project, Fransfontein community projects, and the Belmond rehabilitated water point, among others.
