Kavango West calls for more local authorities in region

Nkurenkuru Town Council

The chairperson of the Kavango West Regional Council, Joseph Sivaku, says the regional council will continue to advocate for the development of more local authorities in the region.

This would ease the pressure on Nkurenkuru, he says.

Sivaku, the Tondoro constituency councillor, says the council will continue to advocate for the growth and development of Nkurenkuru.

“We all know our region is highly rural and Nkurenkuru is the only town in the region. A huge number of people are migrating from the rural parts of the region to look for employment, better living, and service at the town,” Sivaku said in a statement read on his behalf at the official opening of the Nkurenkuru Expo last week.

Last year, Kavango West governor Sirkka Ausiku in her state of the region address stressed the importance of creating more local authorities in the region.

She said the regional council has conducted feasibility studies and earmarked the villages of Mpungu, Bunya, Katjinakatji and Ncamagoro to be developed into settlements.

Ausiku said a submission was made to the Ministry of Urban and Rural Development to proclaim the settlements by 2023, while the Kahenge, Rupara and Katwitwi settlements are to be proclaimed village councils by 2024.

“More local authorities will bring growth to the region as businesses will set up shop as well as ministries to render services to inhabitants of the emerging local authorities,” the governor said.

She said more local authorities would create employment, better education opportunities and better healthcare services.
