GIPF appoints another interim CEO

Onno Amutenya

The Government Institutions Pension Fund (GIPF) board of trustees has appointed an in-house general manager, Onno Amutenya, as the interim chief executive officer (CEO) from 5 August, while the recruitment process is getting completed.

Announcing the appointment yesterday, GIPF board chairperson Nilian Mulemi said Amutenya’s appointment is for six months or until a substantive CEO has been appointed, whichever happens first.

Amutenya is set to take over from David Nuyoma, whose two-month extension as chief executive ends on 4 August.
Amutenya is the general manager of Information Systems at GIPF.

He holds a master of science degree in financial economics, a bachelor of science in computer science and a postgraduate certificate in leadership development.

With over 27 years of work experience, Amutenya is said to have a wealth of experience and good understanding of the fund’s mandate, operations and current strategic focus.

Mulemi commended Amutenya for having demonstrated good leadership skills and team cohesion.

“He has played and continues to play a critical role in shaping the fund’s information systems strategies that have underpinned the fund’s success in offering efficient and accessible services to our esteemed members,” she said..

Mulemi reassured all GIPF members and stakeholders that the recruitment process and transitional period will be characterised by a proactive oversight role that ensures stability, continuity and statutory compliance of the fund.

Reports have been flying that the fund’s recruitment of the new chief executive is messy, with some new candidates included in the shortlist and old ones removed.

Mulemi said the board of trustees had confidence in Amutenya steering the multibillion-dollar fund during the transitional period.

Since its inception in 1989, the fund’s assets have exceeded the national budget, making it the country’s largest pension fund, with over N$150 billion in assets.

GIPF is a statutory pension fund that provides pension and related benefits to civil servants, and employees of participating employers in Namibia.
