Karibib baby killed in hit and run

A 29-year-old driver, who allegedly has no driving licence, struck and killed a baby (1) at Karibib’s informal settlement on Wednesday, the police has reported.

Erongo police spokesperson inspector Ileni Shapumba has confirmed the incident.

The victim, identified as Shikunda Daniël Munzimba, was reportedly hit by a sedan near his home at the settlement.

Shapumba says the baby sustained serious injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

“It was reported that the boy was under the care of his mother, but slipped out of her sight without her noticing,” Shapumba says, adding the accident happened in the blink of an eye.

Following the accident, the driver, whose identity has not been released, reportedly fled the scene.

However, he later turned himself in to the police.

“The suspect was arrested on counts of culpable homicide, failure to stop a vehicle after an accident where someone was killed, and operating a motor vehicle without a driving licence,” Shapumba says.

Shikunda’s next of kin have been informed of his death.

Police investigations continue.
