The Municipality of Walvis Bay is hosting the Walvis Bay Maritime Festival from 4 to 5 August.
The festival follows the success of a World Oceans Day event, which was held on 10 June last year.
The inaugural edition of the festival will be held under the theme ‘Preserving a Healthy Ocean Ecosystem for a Resilient Economy’.
The event will be officiated by the minister of fisheries and marine resources, Derek Klazen.
Municipality spokesperson Anita Kaihiva says the festival will allow industry stakeholders to build on momentum by establishing a local festival that celebrates the blue economy.
“The primary objective of the festival is to highlight the indispensable contribution of the maritime industry to the country’s economic growth and development. The festival will allow industry players to create awareness about the services or products they offer and share information on career opportunities within various maritime sectors,” she says.
The event will be preceded by a beach clean-up event on 3 August.
The official event will start with a colourful street procession led by the Namibian Navy on 4 August.
Various forms of entertainment, including musical performances, a seafood cook-off, a filleting competition, sport and games, and special entertainment for kids will be offered.
A maritime competition will also be held for Walvis Bay high schools to submit creative posters related to the festival’s theme to create awareness among the youth.
