The Namibian government has endorsed and joined two global policies on security and civilisation, proposed by China during a Brics side event, the China-Africa Leaders Dialogue.
President Hage Geingob said yesterday that Namibia endorses China’s Global Security Initiative.
“As true friends, we join the Global Civilisation Initiative put forward by president Xi Jinping, encouraging different civilisations to flourish collectively when they break down barriers to work together, and by so doing, renew hope to achieve a shared prosperous and peaceful co-existence of all nations,” Geingob said.
The security initiative advocates common security, respecting and safeguarding the security of every country.
In 2014, Chinese president Xi introduced the concept of a holistic approach to maintain security in both traditional and non-traditional domains and enhancing security governance in a coordinated way.
The initiative focuses on a commitment to cooperation, bringing about security through political dialogue and peaceful negotiation; pursuit of sustainable security, resolving conflicts through development and eliminating the breeding ground for insecurity, while the Global Civilisation Initiative advocates respect for the diversity of civilisations.
The aim of this initiative is for countries to uphold the principles of equality, mutual learning, dialogue and inclusiveness among civilisations, and let cultural exchanges transcend estrangement, mutual learning transcend clashes, and coexistence transcend feelings of superiority.
The president also told his Chinese counterpart that Namibia is at an advanced stage in the development of its green hydrogen industry and the supply of critical raw minerals, including lithium.
“… which is needed for the green energy transition as part of our fight against climate change. We invite you to come, invest and assist us in the development of the green energy infrastructure to consolidate regional energy value chains and off-take agreements. We are open for business,” the president said.
Meanwhile, during the closing ceremony of the Brics business forum three days ago, the Chinese president said their Global Security Initiative gained support from over 100 countries and international organisations.
“China stands ready to jointly pursue this initiative with all others. We should have dialogue and oppose confrontation, forge partnerships, but not alliance, and pursue win-win outcomes and oppose a zero-sum games, and work together to build a community of security,” he said.
Xi said the world needs to stay committed to exchanges among civilisations and mutual learning.
“One flower alone cannot make a beautiful spring; only blossoming of a rich variety of flowers can bring spring to the global garden. Human civilisation is colourful by nature,” he said.
