Oshakati residents will get ten months interest free on their overdue accounts as part of efforts to have them pay their bills, town council spokesperson Katarina Kamari said on Tuesday.
The waiver period starts in September this year and lasts till June 2024.
She said the town council took this decision to encourage all account holders to be able to honour paying their municipal services and allow clients with accounts in arrears to be able to pay off their debts.
Kamari said when the town council waived interest on pensioners’ accounts last year, it also received requests from residents who owe council, for their interest to be waived.
“Council then took this decision following these requests, and considering the global economic downturn that has severely affected local economic development activities in town, which resulted in some of the local business establishments having to close down,” she said.
Kamari added that the residents of Oshakati owe the town council N$80,2 million.
“Residents are therefore urged to honour their municipal accounts as revenue collection of the town is very important, as it permits development in town,” she said.
