Six people died after the cars they were traveling in collided head-on along the Trans-Zambezi Highway in the Zambezi region on Sunday.
The people who died in the crash have been identified as Linnea Lunza Kangamba, Ndara Tjimbi (31), Wonder Mbiri (51), Jao Marcelino Nassusso (34), Snaria Ngombala and Almeida Bernardino (31).
A police officer, detective chief inspector Albius Liomba, informed The Namibian on Monday that the collision happened between 10h00 and 11h00 on Sunday, approximately 30 kilometres east of Cheto, which is situated between Divundu and Kongola.
Liomba added that National Council member and Kongola constituency regional councillor Bennety Busihu, along with his wife, Linnea Kangamba, an 11-month-old boy, a nanny and a passenger, were travelling from Kongola to Divundu when their vehicle collided with an oncoming car.
“It is alleged that the other car, which was coming from Divundu to Kongola, was trying to overtake a truck when they collided,” Liomba said.
Kangamba and five people in the other car were killed in the collision.
“Busihu is in a critical condition, while his baby, the nanny and the passenger are in a serious condition,” Liomba said.
“All the occupants in the other vehicle died,” he also said.
Liomba added that a case of culpable homicide and reckless driving is being investigated.
