The presidency has confirmed that it will confer an official funeral on the former president of the South West Africa National Union (Swanu), Rihupisa Kandando.
The official funeral will be conferred in recognition of his contributions to the Namibian liberation struggle.
Kandando will be buried at Omitivine in the Aminius constituency on Saturday.
Kandando died on 23 December 2023 after being in critical condition for a few weeks.
Kandando was Swanu’s leader from 1998 to 2007, when Usutuaije Maamberua took over.
He joined the party in 1978, when he was 15 years old, and later became a member of the party’s Revolutionary Council in 1986.
During his tenure as president, Kandando led Swanu in an electoral pact with the Workers Revolutionary Party for the 1999 National Assembly elections.
He was also an academic in the science faculty of the University of Namibia.
