Two members of the public on Saturday afternoon helped the Windhoek City Police apprehend four robbery suspects.
The suspects allegedly robbed a young man enjoying a meal at Zoo Park.
Frans Petrus says the suspects overpowered and robbed the man of his cellphone and money.
Petrus says he and his friend reacted after hearing the victim’s calls of distress.
“We chased them and even screamed to signal the taxi they got in to stop. But they didn’t,“ he says.
The suspects were apprehended at around 15h30 near the old State House on Robert Mugabe Avenue.
City Police spokesperson superintendent Marcelline Murapo has confirmed the incident.
“Members of the City Police were patrolling the area and saw people running. The team went to establish what was happening, at which point they were informed of the incident. The members went to look around and came across the taxi that matched the description of the vehicle that was said to have been used by the suspects,” she says.
Four suspects were detained and taken to Windhoek Police Station.
The police recovered the victim’s cellphone.
Murapo says there are plans to enhance security in the vicinity of Zoo Park.
“We are planning to have CCTV cameras installed in and around Zoo Park that will monitor the park throughout,” she says.
She urges citizens to remain vigilant and act as the eyes and ears of the police.
Murapo encourages members of the public to call (061)302-302 or send an SMS to 4444 upon witnessing suspicious activities.
