With more than 14 000 children being trained by Cricket Namibia, plans are underway to build a development centre in the Kunene region this year.
Outjo opened its first cricket facility last year, with 20 matches having been played since.
Wilhelm Tuhafeni, the development officer for Cricket Namibia in the region, says: “We want to make it a regional centre for all development in the region.”
He says the new facility will be used for training and will help to grow players’ skills.
Tuhafeni says yearly planning and coaching activities will start towards the end of the month. He says about 14 000 children are playing cricket in the Kunene region.
Training was previously offered at Khorixas, Kamanjab, Outjo and Opuwo, among other places. “We hope to reach out to remote schools at Opuwo and beyond. Hopefully we can also reach out to towns, such as Ruacana and so on,” Tuhafeni says.
About 50 teachers and 20 schools were introduced to the game of cricket last year, he says. Tuhafeni says Cricket Namibia wants to grow the sport and inspire children to play for national teams in the future.
“We want to encourage every school that may be interested to start cricket at their school to feel free to contact us any time,” he says.
