FC Ongos dropped their first points in the FNB Women Super League this season after being held to a goalless draw by Khomas Nampol, but they remain at the top of the log after the weekend’s matches.
On Saturday, FC Ongos met Khomas Nampol in a top-of-the-log clash between the only remaining unbeaten teams in the league.
In a fiery encounter, both sides gave it their all with Yvonne Kooper and Anna Shikusho coming close for Ongos early on, while Martha Haufiku missed a great chance for Khomas Nampol with an open goal gaping.
Ongos started asserting themselves in midfield with Memory Ngonda having a long range shot tipped for a corner by a diving Feni Mwalunga, while Mwalunga also brought off a point-blank save to deny Kooper towards the end of the first half.
Ongos stepped up the pressure after the break with Shikusho having a shot saved, while midfielder Kleintjie Fredericks went narrowly wide with a long range freekick.
Emotions boiled over midway through the second half when players from both sides piled into a fight and after finally restoring order the referee dished out yellow cards to Haufiku and Fredericks.
In the final stages, Ongos continued to search for a winner, but Nampol’s defence, and especially their keeper Mwalunga kept them at bay with some fine saves.
Those were the first points that Ongos dropped this season after they had won their previous seven matches in a row, but on Sunday they got back to winning ways after another close encounter against Beauties FC. Shikusho scored the only goal of the match in the first half as FC Ongos remained at the top of the log on 25 points from nine matches.
Khomas Nampol also got back to winning ways on Sunday, beating V Power Angels 3-1 to remain second on the log, four points behind Ongos. Helena Shuumbwa scored a brace and Dina Shitula one goal for Khomas Nampol, while Linea Ndameshime scored V Power Angels’ solitary goal.
Beauties FC, meanwhile, remain third on the log after beating V Power Angels 3-0 on Saturday through goals by Tatiana Goaxas, Shamila Damases and Viola Fliete.
It was a successful weekend for Girls & Goals who collected maximum points against Ramblers and Ongwediva Queens. On Friday they beat Ramblers 1-0 at the NFA Centre in Katutura through a goal by Kuhatjiua Tjapaka, and then travelled north to Oskakati before beating Ongwediva Queens 5-0 on Sunday.
Beyonce Cloete scored a hattrick for Girls & Goals, while Uerikondjera Kasaona and Viiya Tjingaete scored one goal each, to put them fourth on the log on 17 points.
Unam Bokkies, who drew 1-1 against Ongwediva Queens in Oshakati on Saturday, are fifth on the log on 16 points, while Namib Daughters moved up to sixth place on 12 points, after an emphatic 6-1 victory against Nust Babes on Saturday.
Ignacia Haoses and Kondjashini Sheehama each scored a brace and Precious Hambira and Petronella Somses one goal each for Namib Daughters.
In another match between the bottom two teams on the log on Sunday, Nust Babes beat Okahandja FC 2-1.
